THE PENALTY
History and precedents tell us who is to die.
Unable to impose upon criminal offenders,
standards of decency have evolved.
An act of vengeance, a retentionist,
an abolitionist, and a seed of anarchy
make up the full circle about the central issue;
lying within a not-so-perfect world.
An executioner is forced to kill on behalf of the court;
while shouting "the dignity of man will be preserved."
Courts stooping to the level of the criminal,
does not enhance life, but cheapens and degrades it.
Caught and convicted in a moral,
ethical, and constitutional soundness;
we have seen the errors of our ways,
and the serious mistakes that have been made,
in an organized society of law abiding citizens.
Innocent people have been put to death wrongly
with decisions too late to be reversed.
The instinct of punishment is part of the nature of man.
Channeling this instinct is carried out
in the administration of criminal justice,
serving a double standard in promoting the stability
of a society governed by laws that eliminate
discrepancy without the precepts of decency.
Those beyond the possibility of innocence will fall.
Judgments are made final,
the subject is diagnosed dead,
and will never be seen or heard of again;
even when this sentence comes to an end.
